My name is Claire and I've dealt with my fair share of difficult bosses over the last 30 years.
I wrote a book a few years ago with the working title Dealing with your F*ckwit Boss which I never published as I got distracted by people giving me money to do other things. If I get enough people registering their interest or downloading the free resources, I will either finally publish the book or turn it into a course.
Particularly in my 20s (I'm 48 now!) I had some extremely challenging bosses in some very challenging organisations. I didn't know what to do, found it incredibly stressful, and it impacted not only my immediate career development, but my personal relationships and health as well.
I wanted to read a book or take a course, but there was nothing available then. I spoke with friends and family, got myself mentors, took courses on dealing with difficult people, brushed up on psychology, put myself out there, and tried a lot of things.
Many things I learned were head slapping game changers. For example, when I finally understood what narcissism actually was, and how they need to be treated differently, it dramatically changed my work life!
Having a few tricks up your sleeve on protecting yourself in difficult cultures, understanding what Human Resources (HR) is really there to do, and SO much more, can turn what may seem like futile situations into career advancement opportunities.
Of course not all difficulties come from bullies. Sometimes it's inexperienced managers, other personal dysfunctional behaviours like favouritism or weird habits, or more serious psychological issues ranging from substance abuse to psychopathic behaviour.
And guess what the #1 thing I've learned throughout this entire journey is...? 👉 You are NOT helpless if you have issues with your boss, no matter what your situation is. There are options available to you to change your work life for the better! Once you understand these options and how they will impact you in your specific situation, the sky is the limit as far as what you can achieve. AND THAT RIGHT THERE is what inspired me to create beatURboss. And you can, no matter who you are, or what kind of organisation you are in.
